Anthony Burns Escaping the Fugitive Slave Law

Anthony Burns was born on May 31, 1834, as a slave in Stafford County, Va. He was taught to read and write at an early age, and  Burns became a Baptist slave preacher, serving at the Falmouth Union Church in Virginia. Working as a slave in an urban environment, Burns had the privilege to hire himself out. It was the freedom that Burns experienced that led him to run away in 1854. His escape resulted in rioting in the city of Boston, where he took refuge.   A Fugitive On March 4, 1854, Anthony Burns arrived in Boston ready to live as a free man. Soon after his arrival, Burns wrote a letter to his brother. Although the letter was sent through Canada, Burns former owner, Charles Suttle, realized that the letter had been sent by Burns. Suttle used the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 to bring Burns back to Virginia. Suttle came to Boston to reclaim Burns as his property. On May 24, Burns was arrested while working on Court Street in Boston. Abolitionists throughout Boston protested against Burns arrest and made several attempts to free him. However, President Franklin Pierce decided to set an example through the Burns case—he wanted abolitionists and fugitive slaves to know that the Fugitive Slave Law would be enforced. Within two days, abolitionists crowded around the courthouse, determined to set Burns free. During the struggle, Deputy U.S.Marshal James Batchelder was stabbed, making him the second Marshall to die in the line of duty. As the protest grew stronger, the federal government sent United States troop members. Burns court costs and capturing were more than an estimated $40,000. Trial and Aftermath   Richard Henry Dana Jr. and Robert Morris Sr.  represented Burns. However, since the Fugitive Slave  Law was  very clear, Burns case was a mere formality, and the ruling was made against Burns. Burns was remanded to Suttle and  Judge Edward G. Loring ordered that he be sent back to Alexandria, Va. Boston was under martial law until later in the afternoon of May 26. The streets near the courthouse and harbor were filled with federal troops as well as protesters. On June 2, Burns boarded a ship that would take him back to Virginia. In response to Burns ruling, abolitionists formed organizations such as the Anti-Man Hunting League. William Lloyd Garrison destroyed copies of the Fugitive Slave Act, the Burns court case, and the Constitution. The Vigilance Committee lobbied for the removal of Edward G. Loring in 1857. As a result of the Burns case, abolitionist Amos Adams Lawrence said, we went to bed one night old-fashioned, conservative, compromise Union Whigs and waked up stark mad Abolitionists. Another Chance at Freedom Not only did the abolitionist community continue to protest following Burns return to enslavement, the abolition community in Boston raised $1200 to purchase Burns freedom. At first, Suttle refused and sold Burns for $905 to David McDaniel from Rocky Mount, NC. Soon after, Leonard A. Grimes purchased Burns freedom for $1300. Burns returned to live in Boston. Burns wrote an autobiography of his experiences. With the proceeds of the book, Burns decided to attend Oberlin College in Ohio. Once he finished, Burns moved to Canada and worked as a Baptist pastor for several years before his death in 1862.

How Technology Can Cure Disease - 2032 Words

As nature deteriorates on several fronts, ranging from ozone depletion to water contamination, scientists and politicians grow more desperate to stall and ultimately reverse the damage to the environment. Technology quickly comes to mind as the most viable solution, having been responsible for great strides in fields such as computer science and medicine. Humanity is fascinated by the question, â€Å"if technology can cure disease, why not use it to regulate the environment?† Questions like this gave way to â€Å"techno-optimism,† the belief that technology can solve all the problems of today and tomorrow. However, techno-optimism is a flawed philosophy that mistakes technology for an environmental cure-all. While the pursuit of ecological sustainability requires the use technology, techno-optimism grossly exaggerates the power of this relationship. It is imperative that techno-optimism be dispelled and replaced with a new, more realistic ideology. Far superior is the n otion of techno-realism, which seeks to find the most efficient, most realistic solutions possible while considering all limiting factors of a particular context. However, at this time, it is more important to promote techno-realism as a philosophy than to describe specific techno-realistic solutions to environmental and social concerns. Embracing techno-realism is the first step in understanding that technology, while necessary to protect the environment, is not a panacea in its own right. Advanced Forensics vs Traditional Investigation Free Essays

Technology has allowed our world to become much more advanced. This was never truer than in the field of forensic science. There was a time where the only evidence introduced at trials was the murder weapon and the testimony of an eyewitness. We will write a custom essay sample on Advanced Forensics vs Traditional Investigation or any similar topic only for you Order Now Now we have DNA, hair, fiber, and soil samples to analyze. We rely on forensics when decomposed bodies or skeletal remains are found to provide an identity and a cause and time of death. The field of Criminalistics has definitely come a long way from just questioning suspects but this still remains a critical part of any investigation. It can be said that forensic science provides amazing answers but the results can never have 100% certainty due to human error. Traditional investigative methods must go hand in hand with forensic analysis in the process of ensuring that all possible evidence is acquired and a jury has proper information to make a fair decision. Forensic evidence provides many answers to questions that would otherwise remain a mystery. We can take the example of forensic anthropology, or the study of human remains. Sometimes the remains are skeletal or so badly decomposed that it is impossible to even identify the victim until an examination is done by a forensic anthropologist. As we learned in chapter 1 of our text, studying remains as well as the insects and soil found in and around a human body can determine a time and cause of death. This is important information useful in finding and convicting a suspect. Every case is different, but evidence is always required to prove guilt. Forensic science has become so evolved that traditional methods might be seen as out dated; this shouldn’t be the case. Interrogating a suspect should be just as important as submitting a DNA sample. No case should rely solely on one or the other. If we consider some of the cases from the past we can see how important it is to have a good combination of both. In the Wayne Williams case there was a huge amount of fiber evidence linking him to 12 different victims; however fiber evidence is only good when you have a source to match it to (Saferstein, 2007). If the Atlanta P. D. had not set up a surveillance team the night he allegedly dumped a body into the river, this case might remain unsolved. An old fashioned stake-out provided a big break for this case. The Manson case is another high profile case that relied heavily on eyewitnesses and informants as opposed to forensics (Bugliosi, N. D. ). In this case the prosecution was able to prove through witness testimony that Charles Manson had almost complete control of his followers. Unfortunately juries do place a lot of credibility on forensic evidence which might be a cause of the â€Å"CSI effect† (Robbers, 2006). The CSI show has captivated so many people with its unrealistic techniques of solving crimes in less than 60 minutes. Society has embraced its popularity and has come to expect something similar when they land in the jury box. Jurors should not base their decision solely on the fact that they have a forensic scientist confirming a DNA sample match with the suspect. Let’s not forget that the scientist making this analysis is human and susceptible to commit errors whether intentional or unintentional. . In recent years many lab scandals have been uncovered from innocent unknowing mistakes to faking tests results. I had come across the story of Mariem Megalla, a forensic scientist who is accused of falsifying evidence she tested. She is accused of labeling a sample of a suspected drug as positive when it had actually come back with a negative test result (Mangan, 2010). Rather than having it retested, she removed the label off of a positive sample and placed it on the negative sample. Because of scandals similar to this the Justice for All Act of 2004 was created. This did require strict guidelines, frequent audits and more oversight in forensic labs but this still does not guarantee a mistake proof result every single time. Jurors must always keep this in mind when deciding how much weight to put on any type of forensic science evidence. How to cite Advanced Forensics vs Traditional Investigation, Essay examples

Innovating Corporate Accounting and Reporting †MyAssignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about the Innovating Corporate Accounting and Reporting. Answer: Introduction Wesfarmers, a farmers organization originated in 1914, is one of the biggest recorded enterprises in Australia. The different business processes covered by Wesfarmers include markets, inns, accommodation stores, alcohol, office supplies, and retail establishments. It also comprises industrial division in the midst of firms in chemicals, composts, vitality, mechanical, and petroleum. This report is a literature review on Wesfarmers and its adoption of the accounting software package. It also discusses about the Wesfarmers current market size, their competitors, and relevant suggestions on accounting software. Any organization possesses a certain framework in order to distribute the enterprise duties to each and every worker in the organization. By this way, the employees will not have any confusion in their own role. Supervision of the work is carried out by task synchronization and organizational manoeuvre. The greatest business venture is attained by Wesfarmers with present income of $68.44 billion in 2017. The Wesfarmers Managing Director, Goyder stated that the groups exposure together with the revolution formation can be streamlined by the amendment in business operations (Young, Castleberry and Coleman, 2016). Two departmental stores namely Kmart and Target are announced by the Wesfarmers in the year 2016. Having an investor base of roughly 530,000, the largest Australias private division business employed about 220,000 workers. Homebase belonging to Home Retail Group is obtained for 340 million dollars that leads to adjoining of 15,000 workers in the Ireland and England to the Wesfarmers organization (Friesen, Kay, Eibach and Galinsky, 2014). None other noteworthy modifications are made in the organizational structure, ownership, or company size during the year. The hierarchical organization structure of Wesfarmers organization contains the administrator at the topmost position pursued by manager, and executives. The team leaders are responsible for verifying that the job has been completed. The employees give details to the team leaders who are also the ground level administrator. The consistence level cannot be achieved without the presence of proper organizational structure. A robust organizational structure of a company results in enhanced interaction, cohesive capability, and a properly delineated command. Some problems like productivity deficit and intrinsic inconsistency can be encountered even if the organizational structure is effective. For preserving a robust organizational scaffold, the issues associated with the organizational structure should be identified and dealt with (Hill, Jones and Schilling, 2014). Correspondence is another issue that is identified with the operational issues within the association. The perplexity and change extent inside the association due to the lack of correspondence inside the individuals from the organization is made in connection to the part of the hampered representatives. In the similar way, Wesfarmers is also confronted with some operational issues as listed below. If the new users in departmental stores do not hold valid credit provisions, the sales process may have certain divergence with accounting process. When the products are not constructed rapidly, the shipping deadlines are not met and the management become anomalous to manufacturing process. Competition arises inside various departments of Wesfarmers to ensure the success of the company. This results in the communication breaks and production failure in the organization. Due to the issues in the operational structure of Wesfarmers and its business acquisition during the year 2008, revenues were declined by 13.5%. Moreover, the analysts have anticipated the revenue fall since the multi-billion dollar expedited for the purpose of decreasing prices to increase the sales of provisions. Due to this, the Wesfarmers provisions sales growth was surpassed when compared to Coles. Hence, Wesfarmers is deciding to engrave the product assortment. Wesfarmers faced the retail challenge when its business division in Perth has blundered to a depleted development and no-intensification stage. This phase shift has decreased the organizations stock market price of about 6 billion dollars. The September month quarter sales of Wesfarmers exposed its disputes of larger dependency on the retail sectors notable alcohol and provisions sector that can be assaulted from various tracks. The Wesfarmers has confronted with accounting mistakes at Target subordinate. The revenues post tax was measured as 15 million dollars and it is 1.1 % lower than the reported tax. And so, Wesfarmers is currently engaged with their dealers in order to unravel the accounting procedure. Another operational issue concocting various designators is cost. The future insights of the Wesfarmers experts will be on the designation of the employment part. If the designation of the duty is not legitimately circled among the representatives, this issue will be emerged. As stated by Hill, Schilling, and Jones (2014), the supervisors take full control over the particular division or the whole enterprise. By this way, workers are de-motivated and the organizational operation was affected. Based on the necessity of an enterprise, selecting the suitable system acquisition method is a difficult process. Systems utilized by the enterprise are dependent on the companys own ability. Supervision is not provided while selecting the acquisition technique since there is more number of prevailing acquisition methods that results in mystification (Nica, 2013). By being a multinational corporation, Wesfarmers pact with several kinds of manufactured goods ranging from food to coal (Young, Castleberry and Coleman, 2016). Due to the nature of Wesfarmerss business, ERP software is selected for increasing the productivity. ERP software is efficient software comprising necessary potential required by an enterprise. The software can be utilized by the organizations for administering the whole business operations. ERP software is absolute for Wesfarmers, since the organization administration is versatile as it is covenant with home equipments, departmental stores, coal mining, etc. The main advantage of employing ERP software in Wesfarmers is that the amenities provided by the software are worthier than its installation cost. In addition to that, ERP system acquisition achieves all the accounting software requirements with excellent authoritarian capability and is more time effective (Jin, Ji and Gu, 2016). Sales Procedure Flowchart of Wesfarmers The Wesfarmers selling process comprises four stages namely promotion, eligibility, recommendation, and services and product delivery. This process is conceded with respect to its conjectures, business intention, prospects, pleased consumers, and contracts (Morse, 2016). Wesfarmers organized a project that is intended to explain the effectiveness of the companys sales force. The training incorporates sales training policy improvement and reassessment. The certified training is also provided in the domain of stores and frontier supervision. The sales process comprises variety of essential steps for attaining an efficient outcome. According to Mark Roberge, Running any business not including the sales process is same to steering in the dimmer area. The sales procedure procured by Wesfarmers is provided below. While acquiring the ERP software in various regions and enterprises, the software installation and updating concerns need to be taken into account. Nevertheless, technology adoption is not essential for installing the software. The modification in business executives leads to risk that should be managed inside the organization (Mayer, Melitz, and Ottaviano, 2014). The hazards encountered during the execution of ERP software are enlisted below: Projects administration mislay and software implementation adjournment Risks associated with information reliability, management, and process Price concerns and repeated modification Deficiency in the expertise to handle in-house business processes Conformity issues Lack of association in business objective, ERP execution, and organizational framework Detecting the counterfeits related to the ERP execution is a complicated process (Schaltegger, Etxeberria, and Ortas, 2017). But, the swindles in business operations can be managed by the deception investigators and examiners. Log is examined in order to detect the malevolent activities. The confronted frauds belong to different categories. And, transmitting the information and altering the information manually can create additional risk in the business process while installing the ERP. Adoption of Accounting Software Package in Wesfarmers While incorporating the accounting software in an organization, some dilemma is occurred in selecting between the existing accounting software and software that is opted by the enterprise. The contradiction mainly lies in the implementation cost of the accounting software that requires to be upgraded regularly (Yen, Hu and Li, 2015). The technology is evolving day by day so that the experts are encouraged to modify their subsisting software (Highmore, 2001). This leads to an enhanced performance in the business. Accounting software is also required to beat the competitors and to possess the competitive advantage. For adopting the accounting software, the organizations entire accounting system should be modified completely to match the system acquisition method with that of the organizational operation. Accounting software adoption also imparts the execution of already existing accounting software together with the cotemporary accounting software. More number of accounting software packages are espoused by various companies from various sectors (Leon, 2014). MYOB ERP is the accounting software implemented by Wesfarmers. Current Market Size of Wesfarmers The Wesfarmers organization is widely functioning in Australian country and contains marketplace availability in New Zealand. But the organization residing in New Zealand does not contain international presence and market availability. Business operating under the designation of Coles, Kmart, Bunnings, Target, etc. (Sorensen and Stanton, 2014) are functioned over many warehouses and departmental shops. In Ireland, the association has been quite recently initiated. For attaining long haul development in huge piece of the overall industry, the long haul systems are employed. The franked profit of 5.2% is another attribute for representing the share cost of Wesfarmers (Morawski, 2010). For beating the Woolworths organization, Wesfarmers has turned out to be the most distinctive organization in the Australian market. Various administrations and items are managed by Wesfarmers. Consequently, for working in various sorts of enterprises, this combination has been effective. The contenders who are giving intense rivalry to Wesfarmers include Metcash limited, Woolworths, and Caltex limited (Mas, Kolb, Paegelow, Olmedo and Houet, 2014). Even then, the alternate contenders have not yet arrived since the achievement of Wesfarmers lies in its business decisions. Nica (2013) noted that the flexibility nature of Wesfarmers allows them to work in various sorts of industry. The alternate contenders do not possess various clients acquired by the association. Wesfarmers bargain in different enterprises as opposed to the other pioneers in the market. The pioneers experience inconvenience of working in an assorted market (Sorensen and Stanton, 2014). Current gaps or challenges The accounting software MYOB ERP is utilized by the association for meeting the procurement framework strategy (Gollmann and Maurer, 2014). Moreover, majority of the association settling on across the board programming bundle utilizes the MYOB ERP for taking care of authoritative operation demand. Several organizations located in Australia broadly utilizes XERO, which is a new ERP program. The highlights provided by Xero is comparatively lower than the MYOB since it gives the upside of the main mover to the client (Hill, Jones and Schilling, 2014). The cost of XERO is comparatively lower than MYOB and comprises similar highlights like online help, application accessibility, and establishment program (Friesen, Eibach and Galinsky, 2014). To conclude with, the Wesfarmers are suggested to go for the change that introduces the XERO ERP as the accounting software. Reference: Friesen, J. P., Kay, A. C., Eibach, R. P., and Galinsky, A. D. How are the main themes presented in the opening sequence of Baz Luhrmans film of Romeo and Juliet Essay Example

How are the main themes presented in the opening sequence of Baz Luhrmans film of Romeo and Juliet Essay In Baz Luhrmans film of Romeo and Juliet the opening scene captures many if not all of the main themes in some form or another. Many of these themes are depicted with: clips from the film, news readings, news reports, sound effects, music and text. The opening sequence which lasts for two minutes shows these main themes: modernisation, conflict (family), violence, tragedy, death, romance, an arranged marriage and religious aspects. The film came out in 1997 and was completely modernised except for on thing, it was still in Shakespearian language. The original text was kept completely as it was written. The setting has moved to an urban and modern location, Verona Beach in America. The modernisation is the first theme you see in the film. This concept of modernisation in the opening scene is important because the whole film has been updated and if the opening scene was not modernised then it would not make sense and none of the things you see would fit in with the rest of the film. The modernisation makes it easier to understand and you still get a feel for the original because the script is the same. You see a woman newsreader to us this is nothing special or strange but, in Shakespearian times this would never of happened as it is an important job and Women were not allowed these. The chief of police who is one of the most important characters in the film who in the real play was the Prince is black. There is no way is Shakespearian times that the Prince of Verona would have been black. This is due to old times being so racist and, this represents how far the whole world has come in not being racist and how much it has changed. This small thing to us is a dep iction of modernisation. Also the fact of the news report is an example of our times, as they definitely did not have televisions in those days. Instead of seeing the houses where they live you see the office blocks that they own. These are two main viewpoints of the city and are separated by a statue of Jesus Christ to show that the two families are separated by religion. At the beginning you see police cars and helicopters these are another definite modernisation to the film. When Romeo and Juliet was written the weapon that would have been used was a sword, in the film they use guns. However unlike today where gun laws are very tight and strict you see people walking around with them as if they were in the olden days and they were swords. The setting is an important part of the film. It is a modern city with big buildings and everything you would expect from a big city in America. The new setting is not an essential part to the film but I think it is a good one in making it easier to understand and relate to. It is a very dramatic city with very big features, which go with the play for example, the chapel of the Capulet family and the two skyscrapers, one belonging to each family. The big buildings represent the status of the two families among the other people in the city. It also shows the viewer that the two families are equal in class. This is also stated at the beginning, Both alike in dignity. The city is very glamorous and suits the style of living that you would expect from the two families. The family feud between Montague and Capulet is present and very clearly visible right from the start of the film. This is the main theme of the whole film, is that if the families had of settles their differences and got along then the marriage of Romeo and Juliet would not have had to be secret. Also Tybalt would still be alive and neither Romeo nor Juliet would have died. We can tell that they are enemies even if you did not know the plot to Romeo and Juliet at all. The viewers see the heads of the family at the top of the page and then you see that piece of paper in flames representing there hate for each other and their families. Also there office blocks are separated by Jesus showing us that there is only on thing that can actually keep them apart and that is Religion that being the power of God. Police are seen to be attempting to control riots however violence still breaks out. You can also tell that they have their differences from the news report. For something to be reported on the news it is often bad, this is exactly that. The news report tells us that the family conflict forced the two lovers into dying. From the start a sense of tragedy is placed in the viewers mind. Violence is the most featured of all the main themes in the opening sequence. This is important as it let you know what is coming. It also tells you how bad it actually is and that it is not some petty little squabble but it is actually very grave and serious maybe, more than at first presumed. The violence shows what is actually the deaths of all the main characters for example there are scenes from the fight at the petrol station, the beach and the riverside. The violence is what takes up most of the opening sequence but in the actual film it does not take up anywhere near the percentage you are lead to think. The first indication of violence comes right at the beginning of the scene. It is a police car that appears to be in pursuit. You then see flames, riots and people being arrested. There are then several clips of guns being fired and people being shot one after the other. There are several shots at the beginning from an aerial view, which appears to be from a helicopter, and y ou are led to think that the helicopter maybe the police are after someone. The sound effects that support this are also very important and lead you to the conclusion how much the police are involved in the actual film and therefore could be violence. We can tell this by the fact that we hear police radios going off over the music. They are not very distinct but never the less they are there. The music is very powerful and is the kind of music for this setting. It is fast, powerful and very much gives the impression of a climax and excitement, which in films violence brings. Tragedy is another very powerful theme in the film and is also featured very much in the opening sequence of clips. Many of the family members and Mercutio are seen to be dying. Some of the clips you do not realise that they are representing tragedy but after you have seen them in the film you realise that they are. An example of this being the Capulet vault where Juliet is laid to rest. Before you see the film as a viewer you may be lead into thinking that this is a regular church. Tragedy plays a very important part in the film and a very powerful one as well. We can see that it is a very important part in the film from the clips of people dying that are part of the family. You see the vault of the Capulet family several times. A character who is focused on quite a lot in the sequence is Father Lawrence. He is the one who gives Juliet the poison to take. This leads to Romeos death and therefore Juliet. The other people you see in the sequence all have something to do with tragedy. The heads of the family represent tragedy because there argument is what really killed Romeo and Juliet. The other main characters in the sequence are Tybalt and Mercutio who both die. The idea is enhanced from the music, which is classical, and the chapel that Juliet is set to lay in has a choir. The concept of doom is re-iterated by aerial news reports creating an atmosphere of severity and disaster. The idea of romance is another huge theme of the film. This is also very evident from the opening scene. It is important because without it none of the other themes would really seem as bad. For example the idea of tragedy would not really be as big as it is if Romeo and Juliet were not in love with each other. The idea of romance is a very important one. There is also the idea of an arranged marriage between Juliet and a rich bachelor named Paris. If this would never have been planned then Juliet would never have had to of taken the potion. We get the idea of romance from right at the very start when the newsreader says Star crossed lovers. This gives an impression of the fact that Juliet and Romeo were meant to be and that they were always meant to end in such a tragic way. You also see text flash across the screen at the start of the sequence, it says, Star crossd lovers, this supports what the newsreader was saying and that they were always meant to be. A key feature of the opening two minutes is the chapel where, Romeo and Juliet get married and they die. Again you have the idea of romance from they place where they get married but also the idea of tragedy from the fact it is the chapel that they die in as well. You see Romeo and Juliet together during the opening; this gives the idea of them being happy together and in love so refers back to the theme of romance. A choir performs the music you hear and when they were wed together a choir was singing at the service. There are visual effects that relate to romance like the text saying Start crossd lovers. Religion is a subtler theme of the film but is very strong at the same time. It is another theme that relates to all of the others in some way or another. For example it relates to tragedy and romance are two of themes that it relates to directly and those relate to others, so all the themes have a knock on effect on each other. A very interesting piece of visual imagery maybe one of the most important in the whole film is the idea of the two family sky scrapers are separated by a statue of Christ. This is obviously a religious piece of visual imagery and a very strong one. It shows that religion is the only thing powerful enough to separate the two families and that is also the only thing powerful enough to bring them together. For example the marriage of Romeo and Juliet. The first thing you see apart from the sky scrapers of the families is a statue of Christ and below that is the chapel that both Romeo and Juliet got married in and died in. Another example of visual indication towards religion is that there are crucifixs in the cars of the family members that you see being driven. You also see Father Lawrence in these clips introdu cing the cast and he is definitely a religious indicator but also one towards tragedy. The music that you hear is of a choir and once again this points to another theme as well as all of the others. That is religion due to the choir singing. You see a statue of Christ but only at aerial camera angle. This represents to us the importance of the statue in the whole film and the chapel below. The last thing you see is Romeo + Juliet there is a very clever piece of visual imagery in that. Where normally the word and would be. It is represented by a plus symbol, which can also mean the same; the plus symbol is represented by a crucifix. This also points to a religious theme and is the last thing you see of the two-minute introduction. The Camera actions are very interesting and make the two-minute introduction very intriguing and action packed. The beginning of the news report shows the camera zooming down a main road in Verona Beach. The camera is moving at a very high speed and maybe you are led to believe that it is being fast-forwarded. In fact I actually believe it being rewound from the end of the news report to the beginning and the story is told from the beginning. So in a sense the film is starting from the end and moving through back to the beginning within the two-minute opening. The camera is then placed inside a helicopter. Maybe this is through the eyes of a police helicopter or a news helicopter reporting. The camera spins around a certain point where the trouble appears to actually be around. That is the Vault of the Capulet and once again this is at the end of the film and therefore supports my theory of the tape being rewound. The cutting is very jagged and goes from one shot to another almost in stantly. This is due to there not being much time to fit it all in and when you fast-forward or rewind a film the shots go very quickly between each other. A film trailer also has this kind of cutting to fit it all in within a short space of time. In those two minutes you see many main themes of the film all in such a short length of time with many hidden points to them. All the main themes link up to one another and in therefore link up the whole film. Therefore all the main themes are equally important as each other and all make the film what it is. The music also relates to many themes in one way or another. The idea of a choir singing it allows it to fit in to many themes. Therefore I think that piece of music was a very good choice as it can make you think about all the main themes at once. The visual imagery was also very good in those short two minutes. Most of which referred to religion in some form or another.

Thomas Paine essays

Thomas Paine essays Thomas Paine Thomas Paine was born on January 29, 1737 in England. He started to work after a short and basic education. He was an unsuccessful man until he met Benjamin Franklin in 1774, who advised him to immigrate to America. He sailed for Philadelphia that same year, 1774, and started as a publicist. He first published his African Slavery in America, in the spring of 1775, criticizing slavery in America being unjust. While in Philadelphia, Paine felt the spirit of rebellion that was going on in the colonies, both, after the Boston Tea Party and when the fighting started in April of 1775 with the battles of Lexington and Concord. He felt that the colonies had all the right to revolt against a government that imposed taxes on them. An important thing that Thomas Paine did for the American cause was on January 10, 1776. On that day, Paine wrote a pamphlet called Common Sense. This pamphlet argued for complete independence. It was intended to convince Americans that sooner or later independence from England must come. It was common sense to be free from England. Paines pamphlet had great influence on the Declaration of Independence of July 4, 1776. Paine volunteered in the Continental Army during the War of Independence and started with the writing of his highly influential sixteen American Crisis Papers, which he published between 1776 and 1783. This was another great importance of Thomas Paine to the American cause. He was later made secretary to the Committee of Foreign Affairs in Congress. In 1787, Thomas Paine returned to England, where he wrote The Rights of Man, in support of the French Revolution. He returned to America again in 1802 after an invitation by Thomas Jefferson. He learned that he was a great infidel, or simply forgotten for what he had done for America. Thomas Paine died in New York City on June 8, 1809. In conclusion, Thomas Paine was very important to the American cause....

Assess the extent to which it would be beneficial for Norway to join Essay

Assess the extent to which it would be beneficial for Norway to join the European Union - Essay Example In fact, Norway has close political and economic ties with the EU (regjeringen, 2011). For instance, according to regjeringen (2011), Norway and the EU are members of the European Economic Area (EEA, signed in 1994). Moreover, the EEA agreement regulates the relationship between Norway and EU (regjeringen, 2011). In addition, Norway and the European Union signed Schengen agreement and they are partners in the Iceland and Liechtenstein (regjeringen, 2011). The foundations of Norway-EU trade relations were led by the EFTA (European Free Trade Association), which was established in 1960 (regjeringen, 2011). The EU in collaboration with Norway participate in the fields of justice and home affairs, climatic changes, foreign policies, research policies and in regulation of energy consumption (regjeringen, 2011). Increase in cooperation of Norway with European Union dramatically affects more aspects of both Norwegian and the EU community and economy (regjeringen, 2011). Norway is a major su pplier of natural gas supplying up to 24% of the total gas imports, (regjeringen, 2011). Norway has contributed to the EU budget â‚ ¬ 230 million in 2010 (regjeringen, 2011). In addition, according to regjeringen (2011), the overall amount of Norway’s export to the EU is 80.7%. In order to understand the importance of the EU for Norway, one should not only look at the EEA Agreement, but analyze the entire structure of agreements. For example, the Schengen Agreement or the many other agreements between Norway and the EU that concern Justice, Security policy, fisheries and agriculture (regjeringen, 2012). On the other hand, Norway persistent refrains from joining the EU for various reasons, even though accession to the EU would bring new insights and new opportunities for Norway across diverse areas. The Third Century Crisis Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Third Century Crisis - Research Paper Example The fact that the murder was carried out by this own people is a fact that made the citizens of the country lose trust in the running of the empire (Sisem, 2014). People had different views regarding the administration and this lack of trust made people not operate as a unit as they had been doing prior to the death of Emperor Alexander (Liu & Xiaobing, 2013). Many of the people that worked for the Emperor did not believe in him and they stated that the reason for this was that Alexander was weak and did not have the required Leadership styles (Wolf, 2005). Contrary to their beliefs, they had the idea that Alexander Severus was on the German side and was the reason why he resorted to diplomacy as a way of dealing with them. Another event that led to the collapse of the empire was the increase in the number of raids that took place in the years that followed the death of the empire. These raids came from different people in the administration and the reason for them was the fact that they all wanted to have a word in the running of the empire (Latourette, 2014). Many of the people had different ideologies regarding the best manner through which the citizens of the country could maintain their resources. These differences made the leaders implicate each other, leading to people turning on each other, and the result was the collapse of the Roman Empire. The outbreak of small pox was another cause of the collapse of the Roman Empire. Small pox was a common disease in those ages and the fact that physicians were yet to come up with a cure made the empire suffer a lot with regard to the number of people that died from it (Wong, 2009). Small pox was a disease that affected people across different ages and the consequent of this was a weak empire. Regardless of whether individuals had the disease or not it affected people both directly and indirectly (Gao, 2008).

The data for this research was collected through the self-administered questionnaires, which have been filled by generation Y of Pakistan who uses such Social Networking websites. Three different tests were applied including regression, covariance and correlation for analysis. Findings suggest that the positive significant correlation found between Mental Stress and Physical Stress, and Physical Stress and Co Curricular activities, Ease and Online Communication, Ease and Learning Perspective, Online Relationship and Offline Relationship. While the results of covariance and regression had revealed significant predictors (exogenous) as the influencing factors on the use of SNS and its impact. Man is a social animal. Human beings cannot live without social activities, as they want to interact, share and learn which brings changes in them and in their lives. There are different mediums to interact and share like some people likes to interact by calling their loved ones, some write letters to each other, some like to meet face-to-face and mow most of the people go for internet as a medium to share as its the latest ,easy and affordable way . In recent time, people are attracted towards the new medium to interact i.e. Social Networking Sites. Social networking is the combination of two words. The first one is social which means that human society and the other word is networking which means the act of meeting new people in a business or social context. History of social networking is very old but the new shape of social networking in this era is a service focuses on building and reflecting of social networks or social relation among peoples. It is just a kind of social structure, in which people love to interact and communicate with their love ones. (ezinearticles) For youngsters internetworking is almost social networking. From last few years, a large number of populations is diverting from their duties and works to internet; some people use it for their project; some of them use it for online gaming. But majority are using it for social networking just to interact with their friends, relatives, some people are using for making a relationship and many of them using it just for fun but the social networking has some positive and negative impact. (ezinearticles) Social Networking Sites offers people to make new profiles, post pictures, play games and interact with their relatives and friends. Social Networking Sites offers allure due to which people divert from their works and other things, which in return increase stresses in their lifestyle. Being a form of virtual community Social Networking Sites are a great arena, which provides its users to connect, communicate, share information and maintain social relationships among social circles of the people. Finin et al. (2005, p. 419) define a social network as: An explicit representation of the relationship between individuals and groups in the community. Social Networking Sites are also been defined as: An online space that allows people to connect, share, communicate, establish or maintain connection with others. (Cain, 2008) Social Networking Sites are well-liked nowadays. Except from texting and calling, Social Networking Sites are one of the popular and easy ways to keep in touch with a person. Communication is very imperative to keep the friendship and the closeness of people. If you have not communicated within the day, within the week, within the month and within the year, it will have an effect on the closeness. Social Networking Sites are the easy and best way to communicate to those people. It is an excellent way of communicating with the people we recognize. We can also have the possibility of meeting new friends. They can be from within our country, or even from dissimilar parts of the world. These websites help us cooperate with people from distant places. We mail them; we make conversation with them, and even play games with them. Social Networking Websites recommend people to stay in touch, exchange contact information, send immediate message, and stay up to date of friends activities and what they are doing. In a similar fashion as blogs, SNS allow individuals to present themselves to other users using a variety of formats, including text and video. Just like chatting services, SNS incorporate a list of other users with whom individuals share a connection. But unlike any other web service, SNS allow individuals to make visible their list of connections to others and to traverse their social networks (boyd Ellison, 2007). Social Networking Sites have a tendency to share some conservative features. For the most part, individual users are encouraged to make profiles enclosing a variety of information about them. Users can frequently upload snaps of themselves to their profiles, post blog access for others to read, search for other users with comparable interests, and gather and share lists of associates. In addition, user profiles often have a segment dedicated to comments from friends and other users. To guard user privacy, social networks usually have controls that allow users to decide who can view their profile, contact them, add them to their list of contacts, and so on. In life of todays youth, virtual communities known as Social Networking Sites play a vital role. According to a research, more than 90% of teenagers have access to Internet and more than half use Social Networking Sites. (Moreno, Stoep, al, 2009) 1.1 Statement of the Problem Todays generation is swamped with various Social Networking Sites on the Internet such as Orkut, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc. These Social Networking Sites are providing centralized virtual world with the attractive opportunities to avail the facilities provided by them such as making friends, chatting, sharing pictures, videos etc. Excessive use of these networking sites is affecting social lifestyle of the peoples. (oclc.org) The current study focused on impact of Social Networking Sites on youth life, further researchers have focused on the lifestyle of the youth of Pakistan due to extensive use of these sites. 1.2 Purpose The purpose of doing this research was: To understand the changing behavior of youth towards login up the accounts on Social Networking Sites. Through this research, Law enforcement agencies will get aware about the positive and negative impacts of Social Networking Sites on youth. 1.5 Limitation As researcher its difficult for students to invest finance in the research and most importantly researcher found shortage of time in skimming or composing a draft as they are indulge in other academic activities as well. One of the limitations is the burning issue of power breakdowns and during the work researcher becomes the victim of it. 1.6 Operational Definition of Key Terms Social Networking Site: online community that connects people Youth: teenagers or adolescents of nation belonging to age group of 5 to 25 years Impact: reasons or factors that changes an individual set patterns of life 1.7 Summary This chapter discussed the background to the study by describing the context, the problem statement, and the rationale of the study among other details. It also highlighted the methods of investigating and defined important concepts. The next chapter will review the literature germane to the study. Chapter II Literature Review Networking is a way of communication of the 21st century. It comprises of specific grouping of the individuals e.g. Communities or neighborhoods. The most popular way of social networking is online networking. There are several Social Networking Sites, which have fascinated millions of web browsers such social networking websites include Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and Orkut. These websites entirely revolutionized the face of social networking. Social Networking Sites involves a signing up to the site or creating an account which leads to the further steps of creating a profile page which includes the information about the individuals leading to the other applications like photos videos comments etc bounded by the security/privacy settings which can be viewed by everyone in the virtual world. This trend of social networking is new which has been increased in the past decade and is continue to increase with the fast pace. Actually, it all began in 1995, when some early networking sites started. One of the first of such sites was Classmates.com. This site was meant to connect old classmates. Another site called sixdegrees.com became very popular in 1997. This site focused on indirect bind between people. This site allowed users to design their profile and they could mail messages to other user on their friends list. Users were able to network with members who had similar interests. However, the actual explosion in the social networking came after 2004. Many networking sites were commercialized in this time. (ezinearticles) Social network websites allow individuals to interact, share and learn with the people of their interest and help them remain connected. Number of visits to the Social Networking Sites such as Facebook, myspace indicates its popularity in youth. (Cain, 20 08) Communication occur between people when there is an exchange in information in when communicative pattern where the sharing not simply for pleasure-seeking but in order to keep the other person with them to share in return (Boyd and Heer, 2006). Communication is very vital to uphold the friendship and the closeness of people. If you havent communicated within the day, within the week, within the month and within the year it will affect the closeness. Social Networking Sites is the best way to communicate to those person you do not see often, person you cannot mingle with everyday, and person who is outside the country or beyond your reach. You can stay in touch through Social Networking Sites and never miss the important happening of the person you are most concern. There are varieties of reasons why everyone are into Social Networking Sites. People are into Social Networking Sites because they want to keep conversant on the latest happening on the person they are concern, also because they want to stay linked to the person they do not see every day. People are into Social Networking Sites because they want to be having company, to relax and enjoy after their hard hours in school and in the office. People are into Social Networking Sites because of the services and attribute the Social Networking Sites are providing to the user. People similar to journal and with the internet they wanted to share their lives more openly. Initially called web-logs, these personal journals have highly developed. Some personal journals still exist, while other blogs talk about a specific niche or interest. Related to blogs, there is a micro journal of what is occurring right now. These sites can contribute to what is going on in an individual life or can be the information the individual would like to share. Major news events are now breaking online via Microblogs. The best-known Microblog is Twitter. (ezinearticles) Social Networking Sites are now commonly known as the platform for sharing the information. Such information may be shared in the form of photo sharing. It has now become so easy to send pictures by single link. Users tag their photos with keywords linked to the image and allow people to comment on them. Most popular photo sharing sites are Flicker and Picasa. Youtube is the video sharing site that approximately everyone has seen. People can also share videos online to their families and friends. Users can enjoy making comments on those videos that can be searched through keywords added on the sites for searching those videos. Other than these reason people also prefer these sites because they want to relax and be free for a while from all the pressures in the world. People engage in Social Networking Sites mostly for entertainment, for fun and for games. Watching movies, playing at the arcades and family computer are not that entertaining as they used to be many years back. People nowadays are addicted on games online. People would rather stay at home and play games on the internet, would rather watch videos and listen to audios online. Peoples interest is changing so with the mean of entertainment. The entertainment that these sites provide is an influential factor that cannot be neglected. Another influence seems to be the convenience these websites provides to the users by managing their presence while staying at home and keeping up with their daily routine. Different researches have been conducted in order to ascertain the advantages or the benefits these sites provided to its users by these social networking websites. Like (Cain, 2008) found that; Social Networking Sites such as Facebook and other Social Networking Sites require just a valid email address to become a member, thus easy way of joining with lots of attractive features that attract people to join Social Networking Sites. In addition, the past users are already enjoying their features so they are spreading its use resulting in day-by-day increased members on Social Networking Sites. Social Networking Sites are playing an important role in shaping attitude of todays youth. It is also influencing the social lives of people as they are now spending most of their times in browsing Social Networking Sites. It is influencing social lives in the form of identity exploration and resulting in increase interaction among people. (Moreno, Stoep, al, 2009) Moving back to the concept of self, the identity theory defines it as the set of constructed role exhibit the degree to which people explore themselves in some particular societal roles. (Leary M, Cox C, Shah J, et al., 2008) Social Networking Sites provides a platform to individuals to express themselves freely and make them feel connected with the globe. Studies support SNSs within an organizational setting as these sites enable organizations to communicate effectively and keep in touch with each other personal and professional updates as SNSs features self-presentation, i.e., Presentation of self publically but from no w, onwards SNSs have provided their users with the facility of privacy settings so that they can control their self-presentation. This is one of the features, which have encouraged the concept of identity-exploration, as individuals are now feeling free to present their self. Online Social Networks like Facebook, Bebo, Orkut, and myspace has promoted the factors self-identity and self-expression etc which in turn has inculcated in the mind of individuals that they need to interact or login their preferable social communities on daily basis. Thus, are making SNSs as a compulsory component of their lives. Because of such enforcement people now feel their lives incomplete without SNSs and assumes to be something missing even if they are not logged for a day. There are variety of ways individual can present themselves through SNS such as through text and video they can explore themselves as they want and to whom they want to share. (boyd Ellison, 2007). The impact of excessive use social networking sites has generated incompatible results. Based on earlier researcher data from General Social Survey, they find that various ways of surfing internet are differentially associates to social linkups. While nonsocial users of the Internet do not vary drastically in the internet networking size. Social user of internet are spending extensive time on surfing internet has more social attachment than nonusers do. This indicates that heavy users on internet communicate and attach online with people whom they also get in touch offline and these user sustain some of their social ties entirely through online communication. These finding demonstrate for distinguish analyses of usage of internet and impacts on the personal connectivity. (Leary M, Cox C, Shah J, et al. 2008) The invention of internet networking had made possibility for every people to get in touch with each other without having physically interaction. Old means of communication had replaced with the modern means and people feel satisfy and comfortable in interacting online mean of communication and it enabled people to stay connected even though they are situated in different and far places. Online connection has eliminated the time which otherwise spent the time in travelling thats why people feel enthusiastic in interacting online. The foremost chief mode of communication is the internet that permits people to create new social contacts as well as to uphold existing ones. Currently internet entirely replaces the traditional media and sources of offline communication. This shows that people willingly shift from offline network to the online one. (Boyd, d. m., Ellison, N. 2007) Furthermore, the researchers finding demonstrate that size of online network keeps on the same, only the behavior and practices of people communicate changes. Personality characteristics have a great impact in online and offline communication, (Rice Markey, 2009; Saunders Chester, 2008). Social Networking Sites have been described as the relationship facilitator as these sites are facilitating interactions; interaction brings people closer resulting in strong relationships (Cain, 2008). These relationships can later help in different aspects of life such as in finding jobs, meeting school colleagues, strengthens friendships, increase job opportunities through number of contacts. Some significant benefits of Social Networking Sites are that it helps youth in finding their school or college friends with whom there connection was lost. It also gives the benefits of staying in touch at any time and sharing memorable moments in form of pictures and videos. These are some reasons which make the Social Networking Sites appealing. (Cain, 2008) As mentioned before social networking is now becoming the addiction. Every teenager has an account and they login daily to check new updates. They spends hours checking new updates until they understands that they has more important things to do like school works they have missed doing because of signing in into a social network service. Some people are enthusiastic to spend more time being online on these social network services than to spend time studying and working up on school works. This is unpleasant to hear because with all the advantages social networking can provide, there are also disadvantages, like this, that can be or give bad impact to people who exercise them. In educational institutions, achievement is measured by academic performance, or how fine a student meets up standards set out by their educational institution. As career competition grows everyday in the working world, the importance of students doing well in school has caught the attention of parents, legislators and government education departments alike. The youth in use social networking sites as a means of interaction, mingling, and for purely entertainment purposes. Students exercise the Internet almost every day, and they use the Internet mainly for entertainment. These websites concern are stuck in these critical factors: the sites are attracting many teens, some of whom are not making good choices or many parents are not paying attention to what their children are posting on the sites. Some teens connect in insecure or irresponsible activities that comprise: unsafe exposà © of personal information, addiction-spending extreme amount of time online, resulting in lack of healthy commitment in major areas of life, such as academics, that become a serious problem in student life. Not only do social networking sites affect ones academic performance negatively, they are also causes of damage in a students chances of being well-off in the future. Social networking in middle and high school can turn into harm to education. Attention and status is the most important for which most of teens tend to misuse social networking sites and use them for gathering and meeting new people as an alternative of using the precious time for educational purposes. It tends to become a disturbance to these teens; they tend to pay more concentration to these sites instead of the teachers. (Yu Angela Yan, 2010) These sites are reasons of distractions, which escort to their low grades; whoever has social networking web site accounts have the same opinion that social networking sites affect ones academic performance adversely. It can be indirect that usage social networking sites can spoil and be an obstacle to students academic careers. Social networking sites are therefore, adversely affecting ones performance in school. Students are so much addicted of these sites that they even dont realize that they are wasting countless time in those sites. Although the users of old media exist teens of this generation is now preferring the new medium for any reason to the old medium but are also connected with the olds. Today teens are too connected with these new medium of communication and using the internet become necessary. (Yu Angela Yan, 2010) There are many effects on using social networking sites such as time consumption, people who used net just to check their mails now using it for entertain themselves, the use of net are increase day by day, and people divert from physical relations to online relations, their social attraction are being less and their interaction with friends and relation through online are going to be increase daily. The confident level of a children and youngsters are increase through social sites, they can say anything about anyone on any topic easily because they have a perception that no one can punish them or give a reward on their action. They get satisfy easily from social networking sites, and can learn more things easily from others through these sites. They use these sites to build their online image among others by making their profiles on facebook, twitter, orkut, hi5 etc. Putting their pictures and tell others about their life styles and other things so that people get to know about them easily. (Yu Angela Yan, 2010) As the influence of using social networking website is increasing among youth so is the negative impact, which is a serious issue of concern. Some of the major negative impacts of Social Networking Sites include the fact that youth spend most of their time staying online and try to be available on the Social Networking Sites, which eventually make them waste their precious time. The young age of a person is considered the age where one is fully active and has a capability to keep him engaged in various physical activities but instead of spending time in healthy activities youth spend their time sitting on one place doing no exercise and make them lazy. Other negative impacts of these websites are the security risks. Websites like these have all the personal information of the user, which can be misused by others through hacking the account. Cheats and frauds nevertheless are one of the most dangerous and sensitive impact of these websites. On the ground of society behavior these websites makes the people go towards individualism instead which void the social moral and cultural values. Faking things gets promotion through these websites, furthermore, these websites has promoted the hatred among the people on the name of freedom of speech and views. Most of the business considers Social Networking Sites as a way of effective advertising and business, the administrations of these websites instead of paying attention towards making these websites as safe to make beyond the reach of hackers, they are emphasizing on e-marketing to earn their profits. (inkingrey) Past researches indicated that Social Networking Sites is also a place where people disclose their personal information to a general public and that can become a risky matter when the information is misused by strangers or unknown people. Thus, publically displayed information i.e. Personal is dangerous to be opened for everyone; it is referred to as risk behavior. Teenagers can avoid or eliminate such risk behaviors by eliminating risk behavior references and by setting profile settings to private as it will allow owners to set their profile information within a protection wall, thus decreases the hazards of Social Networking Sites risk behaviors and provides a complete protection. (Moreno, Stoep, al, 2009) The main criticism on Social Networking Sites are that the youth may open themselves in front of general public which may include strangers who can search them easily and can misuse their personal information which are commonly revealed by Social Networking Sites users. (Cain, 2008) Social Networking Sites are such platform that brings people publically along with their personal information. Thus enables public to intervene in others information so the four characteristics of mediated public are defined as persistence, search-ability, reliability and invisible audience. Conversations, pictures and videos remain linked for years and the common people have access to them even when the user attitude has been matured. (Cain, 2008) There are many controversies about the use of Social Networking Sites as it poses risks such as privacy, safety and revealing personal information to the world. Press has also focused on the negative consequences of Social Networking Sites such as they quoted many cases related to college students who suffered negative outcomes because of the problematic activities in which they were engaged at Social Networking Sites as their private informations were exposed to public easily which is putting their identity at risk. (Cain, 2008) Students have been expelled from their classes mostly because of risky postings on Facebook and some of the students were harassed and faced uninvited guests at their home. Many institutions have implemented restrictions on use of Social Networking Sites in order to deal and avoid disadvantages of Social Networking Sites to protect university image. (Cain, 2008) As per present, there is a huge population of youngsters who holds a profile over these social networking websites. The term of Social Networking Sites has become extremely common in every house. The talks or chit chat of a peer group does not gets completed without having a conversation regarding social networking websites which is a clear fact that these days it has become a daily routine all over the world to go through Social Networking Sites. No one knows what the future holds for social networking websites but because of current and increasing popularity of these websites, one can easily predict the bright and strong future of these websites. Social Networking Sites will become more important in the future holding more applications to make the life of individual more convenient. The social networking websites will become more customized by understanding the interest of the user based on their behavior. After analyzing the research work of different researchers we can conclude that Social Networking Sites have both positive and negative effects on the personality and lifestyle of youth. By doing further research, which we will be, conducting in future will help us to find out the relation of dependent and independent variable. Chapter III Methodology 3.0 Introduction In this chapter, the methodology implemented throughout this research was explained. Through methodology, the logical relationships among variables indentified which helped in interpreting the data and made the research more authentic. This chapter covered the population details, the sampling techniques and procedures, and the method of data collection. The research focused on the impact of social networking sites on the life style of youth. The independent variables identified were the factors that influences youth to use Social Networking Sites and the use of Social Networking Sites as the dependent variable which these factors had its impact on. The underlying most influencing factors that attracted youth to use such sites identified were peer pressure, identity control, entertainment, ease of use of social networking sites, online communication, subjective norm and the learning. On the other hand, the variables that are identified as the impact on the lifestyles of youth by using social networking sites were academic performance, extracurricular activities, mental and physical stress, online and offline relationships, confidence and satisfaction in interaction and personal desires respectively. SNS Model for the present research the factor and impact variables 3.1 Hypotheses H1: Job opportunity, making new or find old friends, and maintaining social gatherings factors influence youth to use Social Networking Sites. H2: Social Networking Sites diversify the virtual societal gathering. H3: Social Networking Sites affect the physical curricular activities and physical gatherings of the youth. 3.2 Research Method The methods available for the researchers are qualitative, quantitative and mixed research in social and educational researches. In this research, quantitative research method is adapted. Quantitative research is a research involving the use of structured questions where the response options have been predetermined and a large number of respondents are involved. By definition, measurement must be objective, quantitative and statistically valid. Simply put, it is about numbers, objective hard data. (http://uk.geocities.com). The reason to choose this method was that quantitative research would quantify the variations identified in this research, which then will give unbiased, accurate and better result. 3.3 Research Design In this research, descriptive study was used. Descriptive study is a scientific method, which involves observing and describing the behaviour of subject without influencing it in any way. Descriptive study creates the associations between the independent and dependent variables. The aim of this research was to determine the association between the social networking sites and its impacts on youth. 3.4 Population and Sample size The population of this research was the youth of Pakistan who uses social networking sites in their daily lives. Generation Y was the target sample (the age between 18-28), the reason to choose this target was that according to Paw Research Centres survey among 87% of the youngsters, 67% uses internet for using social networking sites which is the most likely age group to use significantly the social networking sites. A Study of a Very Old Man with Enormous Wings Essay -- essays research

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a master of magical realism, twist our minds eye in the story A VERY OLD MAN WITH ENORMOUS WINGS. Our perspectives are disoriented as we are enchanted with beautiful prose and appaled by people’s actions. Through the use of percpective and magical realism Marquez conveys mob mentality and people’s reactions to something unusual. Through the use of magical realism, Marquez shows us the absurdidity of people’s actions. The large man with enormous wings converys people’s misunderstanding of the unknown. Although the large man is thought to be an angel, because of his grotesque looks and awkward nature the townspeople treat him poorly. They shame the creature in various ways. This shows people’s inability to look past something’s cover and into what it really is. Upon the entrance of the angel, the one expects some type of epiphany to occur. Early in the story, the people of town along with pilgrims from afar try to find miracles in the angel. The angels novelty soon wears off and the angel actually ends up a spectacle to the townspeople. They treat it like a circus freak throwing scraps of food to it and housing it in a chicken coup. Thoughts even cross their mind such as â€Å"clubbing him to death (Sic)†. (Marquez) Through magical realism he separates the angel from the rest of the world in a way which could not be shown without the angel being such an outlandish being. The use of the unique creature makes the absurd actions and mistreatment of the angel exaggerated. Because of the angel’s appearance the reader is put into the same position as the characters in the story. The angel’s wings are said to be â€Å"huge buzzard wings, dirty and halfplucked†¦forever tangled in mud†. Marquez puts the reader into the same position as the townspeople. We, as readers, question the same things the people of the town. Once again, the absurdidity of the character presented exaggerates the situation. A circus coming to town shows the reader the mentality of the mob. Upon hearing of a tarantula woman coming with the circus, the townspeople lose interest in the angel. The mob has gone elsewhere. The once ridiculed angel becomes nothing to them. The people acted as a whole instead of individuals when one decided to forget the angel, the whole forget the angel. They move on to the tarantula woman as the spectacle to now admire. The ... ...btitled a Tale for Children, stands as an adult piece. The confusing nature of the story definitely does not lend itself to being read by a young audience. Marquez is telling the reader that even as adults, we sometimes act like children. We gawk at the bizarre and push it away from us. We mistreat what we do not understand. Marquez calls us all children and reminds us of the lessons we learned at a young age and how we need to remember them. Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s story A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings makes the reader think about people’s reactions and natural tendencies by distorting our views through magical realism and awkward perspective. The wonder prose and outlandish characters are just a small part of the wonderful story told by the great author. Through the use of percpective and magical realism Marquez conveys mob mentality and people’s reactions to something unusual. http://www.questia.com/popularSearches/gabriel_garcia_marquez.jsp Anderson, Perry A Magical Realist and His reality.
